Mission Statement
Writing for Freedom (WFF) is a therapeutic creative writing program for girls and young women of color. Our vision is to increase the number of female authors of color to reclaim, write, and share their own cultural narratives to heal their communities. Our mission is to provide girls and young women with therapeutic writing tools and a platform to heal, create, and share their gender- and ethnic-specific narratives.
Description
WFF focuses on young women of color (WOC) that are strongly interested in creative writing. Our participants come from communities in which violence is prevalent, dysfunctional relationships are seen as the norm, and notions of success are narrowly defined. They lack access to proper mental health services and formal writing training.
WFF programming delivers a dynamic mix of creative writing, mentoring, mental health and healing, leadership opportunities, public performance platforms, and intensive writer’s retreats. In the past, our participants evaluated themselves before our program and 100% self-assessed they were not confident. But after our program, 100% answered that their experience with WFF showed them that there are many things they loved about themselves and they felt like they achieved something great.
We need volunteers to continue fostering that sense of self success and cultivate a community in which these young women can thrive.
