ORGANIZATION: Minds Matter Southern California

2016 Grad Class - College Shirts
Minds Matter LA 2016 Grads - Ready for College

Note: This is an ongoing, hybrid volunteer opportunity, with some required in-person Saturdays sessions during the academic school year. Bachelor's degree required.

Minds Matter connects driven and determined students from low-income families with the people, preparation, and possibilities to succeed in college, create their future, and change the world.

Are you passionate about storytelling and helping others express themselves through writing? If so, becoming a writing coach with Minds Matter could be your ideal role. As a coach, you’ll guide 3-4 students in crafting personal statements and essays for summer program applications-an essential step toward college readiness. Your feedback will be instrumental in transforming their drafts, helping them find their unique voice and tell their stories with impact.

Writing coaches bring forth the student’s stories by building a transformative relationship with them helping to elevate their voice. It is a powerful role that requires one to support but not dominate, to guide with positive, constructive feedback and to listen empathetically. The writing coach works closely with the student to bring alive the lessons and learnings from the Writing & Critical Thinking Saturday sessions. Writing coaches help students build comfort and confidence in their writing ability through their patience and feedback.

Time commitment: 3 to 5 hours per week during busiest periods, October-March in Sophomore Year; Attend Saturday sessions in person at least once a month during busiest periods
