We are Seeking DONE-IN-A-DAY VOLUNTEERS!
We know that many compassionate people want contribute their time to meaningful causes but prefer short-term commitments that fit into their busy lives. As a Done-in-a-Day Volunteer for Elara Caring Hospice, you can make a difference in a time frame that works for you with a far-reaching impact on hospice patients and their families who live at home in Essex and Northern Middlesex Counties.
No direct physical contact required: just a desire to make a difference in a day to individuals nearing end of life and their families who are unable to manage their yard and minor home maintenance needs due to frailty, time contraints and/or lack of respite support.
Hospice Volunteer Training is required by Medicare for any and every volunteer in every hospice organization, and is provided by the Volunteer Coordinator. This includes background checks by our company, an application, references and signed releases from you. While this may seem cumbersome, the benefits of this proces are:
- You are making a huge diffence in the lives of people who are overwhelmed with stress, grief and see constant reminders of what they can no long do.
- You become a Certified Hospice Volunteer and can, if you wish, apply your knowledge and skills in other ways with Elara Caring, another hospice organization, or offer your time for future Done-in-a-Day opportunities with us!
- Someone in your life, at some time, will benefit from what you've learned about Hospice/end of life care.
- Hospice Volunteer is a great addition to your resume.
- You have been vetted and cleared as a safe and trained Hospice volunteer which may be applied in other healthcare settings.
Done-in-a-Day opportunities include:
- yard work: weeding, raking, removing overgrown vegitation, trimming dead branches, mowing
- light home maintenance projects: changing light bulbs, checking smoke detectors, hanging pictures, prepping for fall/winter
- fall yard work and debris removal if possible
- boxing up and dropping off items for donation
Things to bring:
For yard work: work gloves, rakes, trimmers, garden tools for weeding, trash bags/yard waste bags, your own lawn mower if not on the premises, bug spray, boots
For items to donate: boxes, gloves, mask (can be dusty), alcohol wipes
For light home maintenance: simple/small tool box, step stool, nails if you have them. We will make sure that that picture hooks, batteries, and light bulbs are in the home and ready for you.
