ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Big Thicket National Preserve is opening a new trail and we need your help! Meet 9AM at our Visitor Center in Kountze, and help us clear and trim vegetation for the new trail. Hand saws, pruning loppers, hand-held power tools, gloves, and other personal protective equipment will be provided.

Work to be performed includes:

  • Clearing brush and small thicketed areas
  • Use of handheld power tools
  • Use of manual saws and loppers
  • Pickup and Removal of trash
  • Hiking to work area

Job Hazards Include:

· Training will be provided by NPS staff the day of each event.

· May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, or occasionally lift items. The incumbent must adhere to safety guidelines and protocols.

· Volunteer will spend lots of time on their feet: hiking varying lengths of trail during summer, etc. - comfortable, supportive shoes recommended; close-toed shoes required.

· Volunteer may be exposed to heat, sun, humidity, various weather conditions, and possibly venomous/dangerous animals while working. Preparation is essential for comfort and safety in southeast Texas environments.

· Volunteers will be using manual and power tools. They have self-certified that the tools are in good working conditions and are to follow safety guidelines and procedures provided by NPS staff.

· Volunteer will be working in close proximity to other staff and volunteers. Safe distance while using power tools is required.

· Volunteer may be exposed to wildlife, plants with thorns and stickers, uneven terrain, and other environmental hazards.

Volunteers are required to wear close-toed shoes. Long sleeves, pants, and personal water bottles are strongly recommended. On site training and Park Ranger supervision will be provided. Volunteers must register on volunteer.gov and fill out all appropriate paperwork before beginning work.
