POSITION/JOB TITLE: Veteran’s Support Group Facilitator

DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM: Senior Services

REPORTS TO: Senior Services Staff

TIME COMMITMENT: Wednesdays 1pm-2pm , In Person.

LOCATION: Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Senior Center, 1118 N McCadden Pl. Los Angeles, CA 90038

COMPENSATION: Volunteer/ Unpaid

PROGRAM SUMMARY:

The Senior Services department strives to create a safe, welcoming, and respectful community where LGBTQ+ older adults (50+) can come together to learn, connect, build friendships, gain support, and thrive. In this effort, the department provides a wide range of activities including: support groups, arts, creative writing, and other cultural events, field trips, financial planning, health, fitness, and wellness activities; showers and laundry services. Our programming provides social engagement and educational and support services to LGBTQ+ seniors; all of which are free or low-cost. Our workshops and activities include; support groups, dance and yoga classes, art workshops, writing and poetry, etc.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports Senior Services Veteran’s Support Group. This provides support for LGBTQ+ military veterans in a safe and welcoming space. In addition to the weekly meeting, the group has pot-luck dinner’s once a month.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1) Facilitate workshops/activities geared for our LGBTQ+ senior community;

2) Create an inclusive environment during workshop sessions;

3) Gather and prepare materials for workshops/activities;

4) Track attendance for each workshop/activity and submit attendance records to Activities Coordinator;

5) Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

1) Strong customer service skills;

2) Strong verbal and written communication skills;

3) Able to work independently;

4) Responsible, respectful, and dependable;

5) Demonstrated ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities, ages, sexual orientation and gender identities in a multicultural setting.

TRAINING, EDUCATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1) Opportunity based on experience;

2) Experience working with seniors a plus;

3) Military veteran a plus.
