We are looking for an assistant editor for our academic journal, The International Journal of Coercion, Abuse, and Manipulation (ijcam.org). The assistant editor will possess outstanding planning, organizational, and management skills with the ability to work comfortably under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
The assistant editor should demonstrate a good understanding of our target audiences and exhibit effective negotiation, decision-making skills, and possess excellent skills in using programs for creating digital content.
Reports to the Managing Editor and the Editor-in-Chief/Executive Director. The approved candidate will be trained fully by the Managing Editor as part of onboarding.
Assistant Editor Responsibilities:
- Serve as assistant to Managing Editor (ME) and serve as ME's back-up
- Maintain files, including active spreadsheets.
- Manage email inbox and correspondence with authors and editors.
- Collaborate with copyeditors, authors, and editorial staff.
- Attend editorial meetings, as required.
- Organize content, appearance, and layout of featured articles as part of digital production.
- Meet with copyeditors, as required.
- Comply with academic publishing industry regulations.
- Send regular briefs to authors that include deadlines and editors' comments.
- Network actively at organizational events, if applicable.
- Commission articles from authors and researchers.
- Assist all staff and authors to meet deadlines.
- Work with editorial team to determine content; obtain author permissions; work with designer on layout and graphics, work with editorial team to review and approve final draft; manage files of each issue.
Assistant Editor Requirements:
- Demonstrable experience in project management and organizing data.
- Strong writing and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to nurture long-term relationships with key publication influencers.
- Analytical thinker with strong conceptual and research skills.
- Natural leader who displays strong decision-making and attention to detail.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent negotiation skills.
- Ability to understand and influence target audiences.
