About Us:Independent Living Housing Incorporated is a nonprofit organization within Detroit, Michigan founded with the purpose of educating children, teens, young adults, and adults with learning disabilities. Our mission is to empower these individuals through life skills training, community support, and the provision of safe, affordable housing. programming tailored to the unique needs of our community’s challenged youth in diverse areas. Through our comprehensive independent living programs and community engagement initiatives, we provide a stable living environment and essential support services. We are looking to deepen out network within the immediate community and develope our first supportive housing facility.
Position Title: Volunteer Board of Directors Member (remote/part time)
Description: Take a leadership role in Independent Living Housing Incorporated's Board of Directors and help shape the future of Detroit. As a board member, you will have a say in how our organization is positioned strategically, with an emphasis on creating community programs that support a wide range of vulnerable youth, early parenthood, peer to peer mentorship and other individual support, ILH mision is to foster lasting impact and supportive housing for people with learning disabilities and the detroit community at large. With the help of your skills in relationship building, fundraising, and strategic planning, you can improve our work and have a long-lasting impact on the lives of young people and adults who are at risk. Your leadership will promote program expansion, encourage community involvement, and guarantee that our efforts successfully meet regional needs.By becoming a board member, you will play a critical role in shaping the strategic direction of our organization and ensuring we meet our goals of supporting vulnerable youth with learning disabilities, improving infrastructure to house these youth, and enhancing school education.

Key Responsibilities/ Qualifications:
Provide strategic leadership and governance for the organization.
Attend and actively participate in board meetings and committee work.
Advocate for and support initiatives aimed at improving educational outcomes for learning-disabled youth.
Engage in fundraising and resource development efforts.
Ensure the organization adheres to its mission, vision, and values.
A strong commitment to the mission and goals of Independent Living Housing Incorporated.
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is preffered; relevant experience in the field can be considered in lieu of formal education.
1-2 year commitment required to ensure continuity and effective governance.
Experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas:
Supportive Housing: Knowledge of affordable housing development, housing policy, and property management.
Supportive Education: Background in special education, curriculum development, or educational advocacy.
Youth Support Programming: Experience in youth development, mentoring, and program design for vulnerable populations.
Budgeting and Financial Oversight: Proficiency in financial management, budgeting, and fiscal oversight.
Project Management: Skills in planning, executing, and managing projects from inception to completion.
Youth Development: Expertise in creating and implementing programs that foster the personal and academic growth of young people.

Description
OUR PROGRAM ILH developed the Todays Youth program to enhance the self-esteem and teach life skills to youth and young adults who are learning-disabled and developmentally challenged. Youth with learning disabilities can lead enriched lives when they are in an environment that builds their self-confidence and skills. The self-esteem workshops and after-school tutorials are designed to help youth build positive self-esteem; identify emotional spirals; understand and apply effective conflict resolution; improve their proficiency in reading, writing, math, science, computer and study skills; and prepare them for reading and MEAP testing.
