Join the Guardian Angel Program and Make a Difference in San Diego

The George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers, Inc. proudly manages the Guardian Angel Program of San Diego County/Aging and Independence Services. Our mission is to recruit, train, and connect adult and minor compassionate volunteers with isolated seniors in partnered long-term care facilities across the county. By bridging the gap between these seniors and their distant friends and family, we aim to reduce senior isolation and enhance their quality of life.

We are seeking kind-hearted volunteers who are committed to making a positive impact. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 3 hours per month for at least 6 months. We offer flexible scheduling, with opportunities for service learning, internships or volunteering at various partnered residential care communities and nursing facilities throughout San Diego’s North county, Nort Coastal, East county, South Bay and Central San Diego.

We welcome applicants ideally aged 16 and up, accompanied by an adult. To get involved, please submit an application, schedule an interview, pass a background check, provide a clear TB test and COVID vaccine record, and attend a 6-hour orientation (half via Zoom/half in-person). Once these steps are completed, you'll be matched with a facility where you can make a meaningful difference.

Ready to become a Guardian Angel? Apply today and help us brighten the lives of seniors in our community!

Mission Statement

George G. Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers, Inc. offer volunteer opportunities for kind, compassionate individuals interested in making a difference in the life of seniors in San Diego County. The mission of our program is to recruit, train, educate & connect volunteers with isolated seniors residing in partnered long-term care facilities throughout San Diego County. Residential communities provide excellent care, but many residents have friends & family members that live out-of-state & are not able to visit as much as they would like. Our Guardian Angels fill that gap & provide a wonderful opportunity for companionship. Socialization is a vital part of our well being, whether we are growing up or growing old our Angels understand the importance of socializing with seniors, especially those isolated in skilled nursing homes, assisted living facilities, convalescent centers, senior homes and memory care centers throughout San Diego County.

Description

The Guardian Angels Program (GA) was organized by San Diego County Supervisors Dianne Jacobs and Pam Slater-Price to reduce the isolation of elderly residents residing in long-term care facilities. The program is funded through a grant from the County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency, Aging & Independence Services (A.I.S.)

Since 2001, the Glenner Centers have supported and overseen the growth of the GA program. To date the Guardian Angels program has more than 150 partnering service sites located throughout San Diego including North County, North Coastal. East County, South Bat and Central San Diego. In partnership with the Glenner Centers, we strive not only to eliminate senior isolation, but to also educate the community on topics related to Alzheimer and Dementia, seniors and aging.

This program is ideally for those 16 and older, we do ask that those under 18 have have an accompanying adult, and legal guardian signatures on the Livescan forms that are required by each volunteer for background check purposes, each volunteer would also need to get a TB Test and have proof of COVID vaccine.
