Our free College Readiness Academy prepares New Americans for college or a higher education program in the United States. We also provide one-to-one support to help students understand how the American college system works and how to apply for financial aid. In this class, students learn:
- Reading skills: such as annotation, critical thinking and vocabulary-building
- Writing skills: such as paragraph-writing and essay-writing
- Study skills: such as scanning, note-taking and test-taking
- Computer skills: such as word processing, navigating e-learning platforms (Google Classroom) and research
Our College Readiness Academy students benefit from writing, test prep, conversation, and digital literacy support. As a Student Support Volunteer, you’ll help students in these areas, as well as encourage and empower them to keep moving forward to reach their goals and utilize teacher support and services.
Time Commitment:Volunteers are asked to schedule a minimum of two hours a week (ideally over two 1-hour sessions) over the semester. Volunteers are required to commit to at least a semester. Fall Semester (September-December), Spring (January- May), Summer (June-August).
Location:For our hybrid class, we ask volunteers to commit to at least 1 hour in person and 1 virtual. For our all-virtual class, we ask volunteers to commit to 2 hours virtually.
Qualifications sought: We are looking for someone who is willing to work with students one on one on basic reading, writing, and technology skills while encouraging growth. We will provide training and support for tutors.
