While we would love nothing more than to accept every individual that applies to our program, we are limited on the number of new volunteers we can accept each intake cycle. Acceptance into the program is competitive, and we encourage all prospective volunteers to thoroughly answer each question in the application to be considered for admission. Ready to get started? Follow the steps below!

  • Step 1: Application - Our volunteer program onboards new volunteers twice per year in winter and summer sessions. The application for current volunteer opportunities will be available from August 1 st, 2024 - August 31, 2024. - Volunteer Application Form - Phoenix Zoo (volgistics.com)
  • Step 2: Interview - Once we review your application, we will reach out to schedule a 15 minute interview via phone call. If selected as a volunteer, we will send over onboarding materials including your background check.
  • Step 3: Orientation -If selected to continue based upon your interview responses and clearance of your background check, you will receive an invitation to Phoenix Zoo Volunteer Orientation. During orientation, you will learn more about the Zoo, confirm your chosen volunteer position and training schedule, and receive training on our customer service, safety, and general policies. To be considered for admission into the program, you must attend orientation.
  • Step 4: Training - Following orientation, all volunteers are required to complete five training sessions in their selected volunteer position. Some positions may also include an associated knowledge assessment that must be passed. During this phase, volunteers are considered 'probationary’ and do not yet receive full volunteer benefits.
  • Step 5: You're Official - Upon completion of all training requirements, volunteers are considered 'active’ and are officially welcomed into the Phoenix Zoo Volunteer Program. Active volunteers receive all volunteer benefits, are provided with their official volunteer nametag, and are allowed to self-schedule for shifts.
