National Public Lands Day 2024 - Natural Landscape Preservation
ORGANIZATION: National Park Service
Please visit the new page to apply.
On September 28, 2024, join park staff and volunteers for a special event- National Public Lands Day.
Since 1994, this annual event on the fourth Saturday of September has been the nation's largest single-day volunteer effort. Last year, over 130 national parks hosted events with 7,600 volunteers donating an impressive 41,500 hours of service. This is also a day where parks that charge an entrance fee will offer free admission.
This year at Manassas National Battlefield Park, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., we will undertake projects that help natural resources staff to preserve the battlefield landscape. These projects may include removal of invasive species like autumn olive, planting saplings, general weeding, and litter cleanup. The final selection of projects will be decided based on availability.
On the day of the event, participants will be expected to arrive at 8:30 to check in and verify their registration. Around 8:45, our natural resources staff will give a talk about the natural landscape of the battlefield, the specific area where they will be working, and how we preserve the landscape. Following a safety briefing, participants will head out to work on their assigned project.
The invasive plant removal project will take place outdoors and may expose volunteers to conditions such as rough terrain, poisonous plants, and biting insects and ticks.
