About the Role

Position Type: Member of Mountain Mentors’ Board of Directors

This is an unpaid volunteer position as part of a working board.


Timeline: Applications will be reviewed starting August 11th and posting will remain up until filled.

Term Length: Two years, with option to extend

Anticipated Start Date: October 1, 2024


The Director of Communications is responsible for directing Mountain Mentors’ communications activities in order to best serve our communities and advance our vision.

Role Responsibilities

Organizational Communication Strategy

  • Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive 2-5 year communication strategy by conducting assessments, defining vision and objectives, creating key messages, planning and executing campaigns, monitoring performance, gathering feedback, and continuously improving the strategy to align with organizational goals.

Social Media Strategy

This role will oversee the Social Media Manager, who will report directly to them. Therefore, the person in this role will collaborate closely with the Social Media Manager to ensure alignment with the overall communication strategy, provide guidance on social media initiatives, and support the execution of social media duties and responsibilities.

  • Develop and implement Mountain Mentors’ social media strategy
  • Collaborating with the Social Media Manager for problem solving needs of the community through social media questions and suggestions
  • Work directly with Social Media Manager to ensure alignment across public communications
  • Collaborate on photo database - content collection, maintenance, photo consent and credit, etc.

Content Development

  • Manage Mountain Mentors’ blog by strategically seeking content from community members
  • Work in collaboration with Mountain Mentors’ staff & Board to produce content for mentorship program operations (e.g., application periods, events and workshops, targeted program recruitment efforts) and organizational operations (e.g., fundraising efforts, events and workshops)
  • Content could include physical materials (posters), website materials, eventbrite banners, newsletter updates etc
  • Maintain Mountain Mentors’ website (content, media etc.)
  • Oversee the regular publication of the Mountain Mentors newsletter (ideally monthly or every two months)

Design Initiatives (as needed)

  • Take initiative to design materials that support Mountain Mentors’ communications needs (e.g., templates)
  • Lead projects on logo designs, re-branding as needed

General Board Duties (as needed)

  • Monitor and improve the accessibility of and representation in Mountain Mentors’ public communications to ensure that they are accessible to and representative of the diversity that exists in our community
  • Participate in any interviews and/or other engagement with partners and/or community organizations

  • Engaged and enthusiastic
  • A team player who can engage meaningfully and compassionately with board members, external partners, and community members
  • A creative eye for storytelling
  • Experience in creating and implementing comprehensive communication and/or marketing plans that integrate various channels and ensure consistent messaging
  • Strong interest in leading, mentoring, and providing ongoing support to existing volunteers to enhance their skills and effectiveness
  • Flexible with your time to ensure deadlines are met and role responsibilities are fulfilled

Time Commitment & Expectations
  • 10 hours a month, with extra hours during summer applications and winter application lead up, as well as maybe during a couple of other key times (ie events of fundraisers)
  • Attend monthly Board of Director meetings (via video-conference) and annual in-person AGM (to be held in Vancouver, Squamish, or Whistler) in the fall
  • Successful candidates will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement and a director qualification agreement (Section 44, BC Societies Act).
  • Complete a full term (2 years) in this position.
