The Literacy Program offers a wonderful opportunity to volunteer with the Alachua County Library District. If you have interest in volunteering as a literacy tutor or assisting with programming, please apply to get started. An orientation and training will be provided to all Literacy Program volunteers. Literacy volunteers help out with:

  • 1:1 Tutoring for adult basic education learners as well as English language learners (usually 1-2x a week for about 1 hour in a library study room, 6 month to 1 year commitment)
  • Small groups (GED study sessions, small English for Speakers of Other Languages/ESOL groups)
  • Assisting with Programs ( Drop-in computer help, NorthStar Digital Literacy, Job Club, Conversation Club, Re-Entry Conference, Job Fairs, etc.)
  • Occasional projects such as assisting with research, flyering, preparing materials, etc.
  • Giving presentations as some of our volunteers are quite knowledgeable in a particular field and host library programs to share this knowledge with the community (computer safety, Mahjong, Tai Chi, FL GED knowledge, etc.)
