Position Description:

Preserve steward will perform general monitoring and basic maintenance.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Walk trails and look for and note problems with trail passage, vandalism, illegal uses, etc.
  • Maintain erosion control bars.
  • Maintain trail closures and reroutes.
  • As necessary, inform mountain bikers of which trails they can and can not use.
  • Pick up trash at parking area and along trails.
  • Track number and type of visitors during your visits.
  • Restock maps and brochures, monthly, at the kiosk.
  • Notify SVT personnel of urgent problems and situations.
  • Maintain trail signage (staff assistance as needed).
  • Perform basic trail maintenance such as cutting back brush and tree limbs.
  • Monitor reservation boundaries annually during spring or fall. Check for encroachments. Prepare and send boundary monitoring report to SVT. If time and interest allow, monitoring boundaries more frequently is encouraged. Either once each in spring, summer and fall OR once in late spring and once in fall.
  • Work with Callahan State Park staff and volunteers to ensure overall cooperative management.
  • Submit regular visitation reports on the SVT web site’s stewardship volunteer log.

Optional Responsibilities:

  • Assist staff with field work which may include property surveys, boundary signage, trail maintenance, inventories, etc.
  • Observe wildlife and changes in plant communities. Document plant and animal sightings.

Volunteer Qualifications:

  • Willing to "adopt" an SVT Reservation close to your home or place of employment and gain a thorough knowledge and appreciation of the reservation.
  • Able to visit property at least twice monthly throughout the year.
  • Physically able to do walk extensively and perform some manual labor.
  • Enjoyment of the outdoors and commitment to conservation.

Training/Orientation Provided:

An individual orientation and training will be provided to introduce the volunteer to his/her reservation and its associated responsibilities.

Time commitment (hours, dates, duration):

May be 4 - 10 hrs/month. Can be flexible to your schedule.

Sudbury Valley Trustees is a regional land trust in Massachusetts that conserves land and protects wildlife habitat in the Concord, Assabet, and Sudbury river basin for the benefit of present and future generations.

Description

Sudbury Valley Trustees (SVT) is a regional land trust, founded in 1953. SVT is dedicated to conserving land and protecting wildlife habitat in the Concord, Assabet and Sudbury river basin. This is one of the most scenic, culturally rich, and historically significant regions in the United States. Today, approximately 3,100 members support SVT’s work in 36 different towns in the watershed.
SVT is responsible for the protection and care of diverse conservation lands that include wetlands, sensitive habitats, trails and other open spaces including major sanctuaries. SVT reservations are open to the public free of charge, and include trails for walking, bird watching, cross-country skiing and horseback riding.
