Reach Out and Read Volunteer
A Reach Out and Read volunteer shares a book with a patient waiting to see her pediatrician

If you love books and reading to children you'll have a great time as a waiting room reader in one of 20 pediatric and family clinics in the greater KC area (see our website for locations). Read aloud from favorites like 'Goodnight Moon', 'Green Eggs & Ham', and 'Where the Wild Things Are' with children waiting to see their pediatrician.

Reach Out and Read is a medically-based early childhood literacy program that provides free books and literacy information to under served families. Volunteer readers share books with kids, talk with parents about early childhood literacy and hand out new and gently used waiting room books to families.

A blast for book lovers!

About Reach Out and Read - Kansas City

Mission Statement

Reach Out and Read Kansas City makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric care so that children grow up with books and enter school ready to read.

Reach Out and Read Kansas City is a pediatric early literacy program serving Kansas City's most vulnerable children. Our program partners with pediatric doctors to make free books available for children in lower-income communities at every well-child visit from birth to five years of age. Reach Out & Read clinic doctors and nurses are trained to advise parents about the importance of reading aloud. By building on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers, Reach Out and Read helps families and communities encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for success.
