Montezuma Well: Volunteer Docent / Guide - FOR LOCALS / Year Round

** This position is for anyone in the local community who would like to volunteer at the site. Various shifts and hours are available. This opportunity is for those who do NOT require housing as being local, they are expected to live in the commutable area.**


Montezuma Well is a detached unit of Montezuma Castle National Monument. The site protects the cultural heritage of the Hisat'sinom, or Ancestral Puebloan people. The sites is home to cliff dwellings along the well rim, numerous pueblos, and an ancient pit house; all which stand as a testament to the ingenuity of these people. Montezuma Well also serves as home to several endemic species!


Volunteer Docents / Guides have the opportunity to talk with visitors about the park and local area. There are numerous opportunities available with flexibility. Shifts are available in 4-hour intervals with the options of opening shift (7:45am - 12pm), mid-shift (10am - 2pm), closing shift (1pm - 5pm), or FULL DAY shifts (8am - 5pm w/lunch break) Interested individuals can volunteer one day a week or as many days as they'd like! The volunteer will wear the standardized VIP uniform described in the park volunteer handbook. The park will provide VIP shirt, patch, and name tag. The volunteer provides all other required uniform items without compensation.


The position is primarily outdoors and entails working with the public throughout the day. Volunteers staff a contact station and rove trails to provide visitor services and information. The park is located in central Arizona and has a picnic area, a 1.5 mile trail (which includes around 200 stairs at various locations on the trail) and a Visitor Contact station with AC/Heating, water, fridge, and microwave! Winter highs average around 50 degrees and overnight lows can get below freezing. Late spring temperatures can average in the 80s or 90s. Individual must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, contacting hundreds of visitors a day and sharing their love and enthusiasm for the park and south-west.

  • A list of 2-3 references (past volunteer jobs, employers, teachers/professors, etc. preferred)
  • Fill and return OF-301a Form (emergency contact info, address, etc.)

Before applicants are selected and given a start date for the position, they can expect:

  • A short phone interview with park ranger
  • References to be checked
