AccentCare Hospice, formerly Seasons Hospice, is seeking compassionate volunteers to assist with our annual Camp Kangaroo children’s grief camp Saturday, February 15 and Sunday, February 16, 2025. This is a free 2-day children’s bereavement camp for children ages 5 through 18 who have experienced the loss of a loved one. Camp Kangaroo is open to all children who have experienced a loss, not just those who have had loved ones on service with AccentCare Hospice.
We are seeking volunteers to assist with the camp as Roo Buddies for our campers. Roo Buddies are a subset of volunteers who are assigned to a specific group of campers and Camp Counselors. Roo Buddies will be able to observe the campers’ journey through their grief throughout the camp experience. They attend all of the group therapy sessions and function as "an extra set of helping hands" in the room. Their assistance during the group therapy sessions is invaluable. They can tend to a camper’s nonclinical needs which allow the Counselors to continue facilitating the group sessions seamlessly. Roo Buddies need to have a good understanding of the children’s bereavement process and how this can be manifested within the group session. Roo Buddies can be responsible for the following:
· Escorting campers to the rest rooms as needed.
· Assisting campers with opening snacks or drinks.
· Assisting Camp Counselors with set up and clean up after each activity during the group therapy sessions.
· Provide emotional support and comfort campers as needed
· Provide supervision for a camper who needs to "take a break" from the group setting
· Assist camper in completion of a project in an alternate location if camper becomes overwhelmed with group setting
Volunteers are able to assist with other activities as well, such as greeting campers and parents and signing campers in and out, helping with set up before camp begins and with clean up after each day, and providing special skills such as photography, audio/visual recording, face painting, prepping meals, etc.
We look forward to hearing from you and helping you find ways to share your talents with children in our communities experiencing grief.
