Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial Visitor Services VIP

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Located in the middle of Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, Arlington House, the Robert E. Lee Memorial represents a long, layered, and complex history that spans more than two centuries. Designed as a memorial to Robert E. Lee for his efforts to reunite the nation after the Civil War, Arlington House is more than just the story of Robert E. Lee. It is the story of myth and competing memory. It is the story of antebellum political, social, and economic conditions of the South-a prosperity and social structure built on the labor of enslaved people. And it is the story of the varied and sometimes competing efforts at commemoration and preservation by the federal government, white and black communities, and succeeding generations that illustrate society’s evolving values and views on war and history and reflect efforts to inform and shape Americans’ perception of the Civil War and its legacy. The Visitor Services VIP will assist park staff in telling an inclusive story of all the people who helped shape the history of Arlington House.
