U.S. Dream Academy

The U.S. Dream Academy, a local non-profit after-school organization located in West Valley City and based out of Maryland, is seeking dedicated volunteers to join our mentoring program. We are dedicated to serving under-supported youth who come from families with a history of incarceration, who may be struggling academically, or who are living in a community with a high crime rate. Our mission is to inspire and invest in the lives of children of incarcerated parents and families in communities harmed by systemic inequities.

As a Virtual Mentor, you will play a crucial role in our virtual mentoring program by focusing on supporting students in our three pillars: Dream, Character, and Skill building. You will work closely with the Director and Mentor Coordinator to develop and manage the virtual space. This position is flexible and suitable for students from various majors and specialties. Additionally, mentors will have access to the Dream Journey Curriculum to support their mentoring efforts.


  • Provide guidance and support to youth through virtual mentoring sessions
  • Assist students with their homework and academic tasks via online platforms
  • Engage students in virtual activities that are valuable to their personal and academic growth, such as online arts and crafts, virtual science experiments, reading sessions, and interactive games
  • Foster positive relationships and encourage personal growth through consistent virtual communication
  • Utilize the Dream Journey Curriculum to structure and enhance mentoring sessions
  • Participate in regular check-ins with the Director and Mentor Coordinator to discuss progress and provide feedback on the virtual mentoring program
  • Adapt to various virtual tools and platforms to effectively engage with students

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have a fun and positive attitude
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both children and adults
  • Understanding of issues surrounding incarceration and the impact on families
  • Basic understanding of Math, Language Arts, and Science
  • Proficiency with virtual communication tools (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet)

Job Requirements:

  • Passionate about youth development and supporting work with youth in high-risk communities and their families
  • Experience working with youth
  • Flexible and able to work the agreed-upon hours and projects assigned to you
  • Organized, efficient, and able to successfully function in a fast-paced and demanding work environment supporting multiple key staff
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Reliable internet access and a suitable device for virtual mentoring

  • Understand and implement best practices as they pertain to working with youth
  • Develop, implement, and execute a successful and engaging virtual program
  • Gain a better understanding of the educational and emotional challenges experienced by children impacted by social inequalities
  • Develop excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Improve skills in organization, public speaking, adaptability, and teamwork

We place a high value on mentors, and the contribution our community partners and volunteers play. We also facilitate a number of interns in various programs from universities close by.


The US Dream Academy was established to provide a safe, loving, and constructive after-school learning environment for under supported children and youth.
