World Relief Memphis resettles upwards of 300 refugees each year and helps them connect to vital resources, jobs, English classes, and community. The majority of our refugee clients want to go to English classes but do not have access to reliable transportation due to being so new to our country. We are looking for volunteers who can commit to driving 1+ adult students to ESL class, 1-2X per week for 12 weeks.

Classes are from 9:30-11:30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the WRM office in East Memphis, at Quince and Estate. You can pick which day of the week and driving shift you want to do, either before class, after class, or both. A typical driving shift lasts 25-45 minutes, depending on how many clients you agree to drive. We try to give you clients who live close together, in one neighborhood of town.

Our clients live all over town, but there are 3 main zip codes that we’re focusing on:

38122,

38104, and

38134.

This is Grahamwood, Berclair, Midtown, Blue Ridge Park, Elmore Park, Cordova, and Bartlett.

You can sign up as an individual, or you can recruit your small group, life group, team, Sunday School class, etc to "Adopt a Route" and share the driving responsibilities each week.

Because of volunteer road runners (drivers), those students are able to attend ESL classes. Volunteers not only fill a need for transportation, but also empower students to become more stabilized and integrated into the Memphis community through both the language skills and friendships they build in their class. As a roadrunner, you also get to form a friendship with the clients you drive, which really supports and encourages them that they have a community who is rooting for them to succeed.

About World Relief Memphis

Location:

5340 Quince Road, Suite A, Memphis, TN 38119, US

Mission Statement

World Relief is a global Christian humanitarian organization whose mission is to empower the local church to serve the most vulnerable. We aim to tackle the world’s greatest problems with holistic, locally-driven solutions that lead to lasting change -- whether in response to disasters, extreme poverty, violence, oppression or mass displacement and immigration. World Relief’s work in the United States, specifically, focuses on helping refugees and other immigrants in vulnerable situations rebuild their lives in a new country.

Description

At World Relief Memphis, we come alongside refugees and other immigrants in vulnerable situations as they rebuild their lives in the United States. For over 75 years, World Relief has been welcoming immigrants and refugees across the United States. In 2012, our Memphis office opened, and we've been welcoming our neighbors to the Bluff City ever since.

For a decade, we have empowered churches, community organizations and people like you to adapt to the challenges of the moment for the sake of refugees. As needs have increased in recent years, we have expanded our work beyond refugees to include all immigrants in vulnerable situations.

Today, World Relief Memphis is part of a national network of offices through which over 400,000 immigrants and refugees have been welcomed into this country.
