Group Volunteer Opportunities with DOROT

Founded in 1976 and based on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and in Westchester,
DOROT promotes social connections for older New Yorkers through a variety of engaging
opportunities to build bonds with peers and volunteers of all ages.

DOROT welcomes groups of volunteers who are looking for an opportunity to connect with
the community and build camaraderie and teamwork. Please see below for our current
volunteer group projects. Further information for each project can be provided upon
request.

Cardmaking
Brighten an older adult’s day through a handmade card. For this volunteer project, your
group will create birthday cards, holiday cards, and/or special notes that an isolated older
adult will receive. DOROT distributes roughly 200 cards per month. Your group will gather,
create cards, and send them to DOROT. Let the creativity flow with this volunteer project!

Offsite Volunteer Project

Packing Birthday Gifts
Bring birthday cheer with this volunteer project where your group will package birthday
gifts that will be delivered to isolated older adults. You’ll purchase the items, gather your
group to wrap the items, and then deliver these packages to DOROT’s office (171 W 85th
Street). Examples of items for this project and details can be provided upon request.

Package Delivery
Provide older adults with a thoughtful package and social interaction through our Package
Delivery program. DOROT organizes seasonal and holiday package deliveries with
opportunities for individuals and/or groups to participate. All volunteers will deliver a
package to an older adult and spend time having a friendly conversation - either over the
phone or in-person. Deliveries will take place in DOROT’s catchment area - W 59
th St to W
125th St. For volunteer groups, the group will gather for a short orientation at a DOROT
location and then be given their older adult assignments together. Upcoming dates are as
follows for 2024:

* Summer Package Delivery: Wednesday, July 17
* Rosh Hashanah Package Delivery: Sunday, September 22
* Thanksgiving Meal Delivery: Sunday, November 24

Onsite Volunteer Project

Package Delivery Packing Event
Help us prepare for our seasonal and holiday Package Deliveries by packing items as a
group. Taking place at DOROT (171 W 85th Street), volunteers will work to pack nearly 500
packages for the upcoming package delivery. This activity occurs the Tuesday before the
seasonal Package Delivery. Ask DOROT staff for upcoming dates/times.
# Volunteers Accommodated: 10-15 volunteers
Time Commitment: 2 hours
Onsite Volunteer Project

Tech Coach Meet Ups
Help late tech adopters work through tech issues. Volunteers will be matched with an older
adult to work on a specific tech issue the older adult is facing. This project builds a
meaningful connection with older adults and helps build their confidence and comfort with
technology. Volunteers are not expected to be tech experts but will require patience, the
ability to troubleshoot, and the willingness to help. This volunteer project will take place at
DOROT (171 W 85th Street).
# Volunteers Accommodated: minimum of 10 volunteers, maximum of 15 volunteers
Time Commitment: 3 hours Onsite Volunteer Project

Board Game Social
Enjoy an afternoon of friendly competition. Volunteers will join older adults in a variety of
board games, card games, and other games as provided by DOROT. This project provides
a lighthearted environment to meet new people and build a meaningful connection. This
volunteer project will take place at DOROT (171 W 85th Street) on one Thursday each
month. Ask DOROT staff for upcoming dates.
# Volunteers Accommodated: 5-10 volunteers
Time Commitment: 2.5 hours
