Grow Your Own at the Kennedy Children's Center is a six-week training program that recruits adults from low-income communities and trains them to become certified early childhood special education teacher assistants, at no cost to them. GYO addresses the teacher shortage at the local level, while providing a pathway out of poverty and into a rewarding, lifelong career for motivated adults. You can learn more at www.kenchild.org/gyo

We are looking for volunteers to tutor the Grow Your Own students in preparation for their Teacher Assistant certification exam! Express your interest below for the date and time you are available, and a team member will reach out to you to explain next steps.

As a volunteer, you will:

  • Instruct up to 15 adult learners at a time
  • Provide both in-person and online tutoring (KCC will provide the Zoom account, but the tutor must have working computer, webcam, and microphone)
  • Develop and implement effective lesson plans tailored to whole group needs
  • Assist students in understanding Math and ELA content through whole group instruction
  • Provide necessary scaffolding for individual student needs

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Previous experience as an academic tutor, preferably teaching Math and ELA
  • Previous experience working with adult learners preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to write and implement effective educational materials

Schedule:

*Once approved, volunteers will be contacted by the point of contact with opportunities to volunteer as a tutor on a rolling basis. Opportunities will be available at the East Harlem Center, the Bronx Center, or virtually. Approved volunteers can sign up as their schedule allows.
