ORGANIZATION: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

One individual (or one couple) volunteer Visitor Services Assistant, with duties focusing on outreach and environmental education, is needed for a ~15 week position beginning August 2024 at the Alaska Peninsula & Becharof National Wildlife Refuges, with offices located in King Salmon, Alaska. Benefits include airfare from a major US airport, housing, and some food expenditure (we provide food while in the field OR reimbursement for food/incidentals pending receipts for up to $35/day while in King Salmon) in exchange for volunteering 20 hours/week toward refuge activities. This is not a paid position.

The Alaska Peninsula and Becharof National Wildlife Refuges’ lands extend some 350 miles from King Salmon to Cold Bay. Massive volcanoes topped with glaciers dominate the Aleutian Mountain Range that forms the spine of Refuge lands. These mountains create a divide, separating the rocky Pacific shores from the lakes and marshes of the Bristol Bay coastal plain. Combined, the two Refuges protect an impressive array of wildlife, including five species of Pacific salmon, brown bears, moose, caribou, and seabirds. King Salmon is situated off of the road system, and is only accessible by plane.

Location:

Mission Statement

Working with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

Description

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the premier government agency dedicated to the conservation, protection, and enhancement of fish, wildlife and plants, and their habitats. We are the only agency in the federal government whose primary responsibility is the conservation and management of these important natural resources for the American public.

The agency includes both the National Wildlife Refuge System and the National Fish Hatchery System.

The Service's origins date back to 1871 when Congress established the U.S. Fish Commission to study the decrease in the nation’s food fishes and recommend ways to reverse that decline. (More on our history below.) Today, we are a diverse and largely decentralized organization, employing about 8,000 dedicated professionals working out of facilities across the country.
