Mission Statement
We provide an equitable and inclusive local approach to support individuals, families, and communities in reaching their full potential through impactful collaboration, education, programs, advocacy, and leadership. Our efforts are primarily focused on 5 target areas: Housing, Education, Employment, Community Development, and Health & Nutrition.
Description
In 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a "War on Poverty" and created Community Action Agencies through the Economic Opportunity Act. The Jackson-Hillsdale Commission on Economic Opportunity opened its doors in 1965 to serve those counties, while Community Action was established in Adrian to serve Lenawee County. The two organizations merged in 1974, incorporating as Region II Community Action Agency, serving Jackson, Lenawee and Hillsdale counties.
In 2005, CAA’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program prepared 1,579 tax returns using 52 trained volunteers. These tax returns brought over $1,456,800 back to families in our three counties. We are continuing our efforts and increasing the number of families we help and the money we bring in each year.
We are currently seeking volunteers to help prepare taxes through our VITA program. All volunteers will be trained and have to become certified through the State of Michigan's tax certification processes. If you are interested in helping us continue to server our underserved community become more financially stable, please reach out to LaVonda Bouler at the number post above.
