Mussel Survey Volunteer FY24

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Volunteer call for mussel survey is happening! Are you willing to wade through Cub Creek (in waders, of course!) to find native freshwater mussels? Contact Natural Resource Specialist Jesse Bolli at jesse_bolli@nps.gov if you are interested and apply here.

The Natural Resource Division at Homestead National Historical Park is seeking your assistance searching Cub Creek for native freshwater mussels. Duties will involve wading and crawling in the creek while searching through the mud for mussels. Once they are found, they will be identified, have their picture taken and be measured.

Starting in 2020, Homestead has been working with Nebraska Game and Parks to reintroduce the Plain Pocketbook and Fatmucket mussels back into the stream. The information gained from this survey will help to inform biologists regarding the success of the reintroductions.

4-6 volunteers will be able to help per survey day. Surveys will begin on July 16, weather permitting, and it is expected to take place over the course of 10 days.
