Gypsy Copper Cabin Restoration Phase VII (Passport in Time / PIT)

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: USDA Forest Service

The Gypsy Copper Cabin is part of a historic mining complex located on Colville National Forest that dates from around 1900 and is maintained by the Forest as an interpretive site. The site includes the main cabin, a smaller powder house used in the past to store blasting powder and dynamite, and the mine adits that are located a short hike away. Passport in Time projects are no stranger here and several focused on the powder house. The focus for this project on the Gypsy Cabin, which has had a few rough years but is now well into its restoration and we hope to complete it this year or next year. In 2020 the first phase of the project was completed where the cabin was disassembled, and its parts documented and labeled. In 2021 reconstruction and repair of the foundation, gathering of materials, and repair of damaged or rotten logs comprising the building was accomplished. With the most recent sessions the walls of the cabin were reconstructed and work on the roof structure was begun.

Phase VII will address the reassembly of the roof, associated areas, and some finish carpentry. This includes the installation of beams, a replacement celling, and the installation of new rafters. If there is time, a metal roof will be installed. Tasks needed includes hewing and fitting of logs, heavy log construction, basic finish carpentry, and other preparation work. Duration is one-week Monday-Friday.
