SustainableSouthbury is a 501(c)(3) focused on making Southbury, Connecticut into an even more sustainable community that sustains a vibrant local economy, fosters human health through clean water, air, and healthy soils, provides economic well-being for all, conserves and uses clean energy and transportation, and reduces waste. Working in collaboration with the town and community we have become a Bronze certified Sustainable Community. One of our major focus areas is on reducing waste.

We are looking for someone lead our efforts to reduce single use plastics and improve recycling in the community. This involves promoting and encouraging the elimination of single use plastics in homes and businesses, providing information on alternative products and methods, running campaigns and events, and working with residents, businesses, and Town officials to educate, assist with projects, and help find financial incentives.

Please contact us if you would like to help with this vital initiative!

Mission Statement

Sustainable Southbury exists to help transform Southbury into a more sustainable community that sustains a vibrant local economy, fosters human health through clean water, air, and healthy soils, provides economic well-being for all, conserves and uses clean energy and transportation, and reduces waste. Think about everything you would want in a perfect town to live in. We work across 12 categories of sustainability including rates and culture, housing that all our residents can afford, recycling, reducing food waste, energy conservation and clean energy, pedestrian-safe streets, etc. Achieving this vision requires participation from the community and its organizations. We founded Sustainable Southbury on the Sustainable CT framework, providing the roadmap, resources, and guidance to achieve a more sustainable community.

Description

Our food waste programs help people & restaurants reduce wasted food. We created a food scrap drop-off program where food scraps are turned into compost. These programs resulted in 38,200 lbs of food scraps diverted in 7 months.

Sustainable Southbury expanded and extended its annual community energy campaigns to cover home energy audits, weatherization, energy conservation, heat pumps, solar, and battery storage. In partnership with solar vendors and SmartPower, the nation’s leading non-profit marketing organization promoting clean energy and energy efficiency our PowerSmart campaign helps people better understand solar, battery energy storage and financial incentives. A HeatSmart campaign will educate residents on the advantages of Heat Pumps and how best to convert to one.

Recycling and plastic reduction campaigns include redemption events on the first Sunday of the month to collect redeemable bottles & cans, making it easy for residents to receive their full redemption amount quickly. Over 100,000 bottles and cans have been collected during 8 events! Our Refill Not Landfill campaign encourages residents to use reusable cups when purchasing hot or cold drinks at Southbury retailers. To help encourage people to use refillable cups instead of single-use plastics, Sustainable Southbury is funding a $25 monthly prize drawing for customers who use refillable cups at participating stores.
