Lobular Breast Cancer Alliance Inc. (LBCA), a section 501(c)(3) public charity, is the only nonprofit dedicated to increasing awareness and research of invasive lobular carcinoma, the second most common form of breast cancer.

Since early 2022, LBCA has been an independent, charitable organization, founded by patient advocates, guided by an expert, international scientific advisory board and a patient advocate advisory board, and governed by a board of directors that typically meets on a quarterly basis. LBCA was incorporated in the US and serves the global lobular community, having participated in and supported ILC-symposia both domestic and abroad. Through its website lobularbreastcancer.org, social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram), and monthly newsletters and periodic webinars, LBCA provides information to raise awareness and increase knowledge of lobular breast disease among researchers, clinicians, patients, and the public. Since 2021, LBCA has also funded small ILC research grants and intends to continue to do so.

LBCA has a small staff working from home offices (primarily based in Massachusetts), consisting of one full-time executive director, a half-time COO, a half-time Director of Communications, a part-time development officer, and various student interns. Bookkeeping is managed by an accounting service that focuses on nonprofits, its financial statements are audited and it has a Gold rating on Guidestar.

LBCA’s formation and day-to-day legal needs have been addressed by a part-time volunteer general counsel who is retiring. With the organizational process completed, LBCA’s legal requirements primarily involve corporate governance, contracting matters and related compliance issues, such as grant making agreements (domestic and abroad), corporate sponsorship agreements, co-venture (cause-related marketing agreements), employment offer letters, publication releases, local advocacy group arrangements, board meeting preparation and attendance, etc. Our volunteer general counsel has spent, on average, about six to eight hours per month on legal matters over the past two fiscal years.

We would like to find an attorney with a passion for our mission and experience working with nonprofits on these matters, preferably one who is willing to serve on a pro bono basis. More information about our organization is available online at https://www.lobularbreastcancer.org.

Mission Statement

As the only organization in the US dedicated to Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer (ILC), LBCA’s mission is to make all who are touched by ILC aware of its unique characteristics and the critical need for more ILC research; to be the go-to source for information on ILC studies, clinical trials and educational tools; to foster partnerships among patients, scientists, clinicians, and breast cancer organizations to increase dialogue about ILC and research advocacy; and to fund vital ILC research. We envision a world in which lobular breast cancer is found early, treated effectively, and eradicated permanently.

Founded by patient advocates in 2017 as part of a larger organization, we commenced operations as our own free-standing public charity focused specifically on invasive lobular breast cancer (ILC) in December 2021. As our organization grows, we plan to make grants to fund research on the detection and treatment of ILC, and to continue supporting patient advocate involvement in ILC research and the need for greater awareness of this disease. We will continue to expand on our efforts to bring scientifically-vetted information about ILC to the public, clinicians and the scientific community through the efforts of our staff and patient advocate volunteers.
