ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

The Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site is seeking qualified volunteers to operate the park's visitor shuttle. Eligibility requirements include a valid driver's license, safe driving record, ability to provide brief information about the park, and a readiness to drive a passenger shuttle. Candidates meeting these criteria may apply for the position. The shuttle is a six-seat, wheelchair-accessible Dodge Promaster. It is not equipped with air brakes, so a commercial driver's license is not required for operation.

The visitor shuttle operates from 9 AM to 5 PM, 7 Days a week. Four-hour or eight-hour volunteer shifts are available within this time frame. Shift times are as follows:

· First shift: 9am-1pm. (11am-11:30am break)

· Second shift: 1pm-5pm. (3pm-3:30pm break)

· 8-hour shift: 9am-5pm. (12-12:30 break), (2pm-2:30pm break)

Major duties of this position include the following. (Training will be provided):

  • Drives on narrow park roads and busy county roads in all types of traffic and weather conditions.
  • Operates one or more vehicles including passenger shuttle vans, cargo vans, and pickup trucks.
  • Operates a vehicle on either specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules on public roads.
  • Navigates various traffic and weather conditions and follows all safety rules and regulations.
  • Answers questions about the park.
  • Operates a wheelchair lift and assists less-mobile visitors.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards (for volunteers). A uniform will be provided.
  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  1. Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
  2. Ability to drive safely (Motor Vehicles).
  3. Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (related to motor vehicle operation and wheelchair lift operation).
  4. Safe operation of motor vehicles.
  5. Reliability and dependability as a motor vehicle operator.
  6. Attention to cleanliness (including keeping things neat, clean, and in order).


Working Conditions: Incumbent is required to work outside and is exposed to hot and cold temperatures. Operates vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads.
