Visitor Information Assistant

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

I am interested in finding a Visitor Services Volunteer to work with our small but mighty Interpretive staff here at Curecanti National Recreation Area. Curecanti is located on the 'western slope' of Colorado and is home to the largest reservoir in the state. While many come to boat or fish on the water, Curecanti stretches over 60 miles and people also enjoy camping and hiking throughout the park. The Visitor Services Volunteer will report to the Elk Creek Visitor Center at our park headquarters. When not staffing the Visitor Center, this Volunteer-In-Park will assist in our ranger-led programming.

In 2021, Curecanti was certified as an International Dark Sky Park. 2-3 nights per week, our staff offers constellation tours and telescoping for park visitors. If that's something you're interested in, having an extra hand for astronomy programming is always helpful!

If you're not interested in astronomy programming but are interested in being a part of other ranger-led programs, there are plenty of topics to engage visitors with: water conservation and recreation, wildlife, human history, etc.

The timing and duration of this position is currently flexible. Summer is our busier season so finding a volunteer to step in as soon as possible would be ideal. Park headquarters is a 20-minute drive from the town of Gunnison, Colorado where local amenities can be found. Access to a personal vehicle is encouraged for the convenience of groceries, gas, and restaurants.
