About FLAMENCO LATINO

Location:

8412 35TH AVE APT 1E, JACKSON HTS, NY 11372, US

Mission Statement

Flamenco Latino was founded to explore the ida y vuelta ("round trip") styles. Within flamenco traditions, this represents assimilation during the late 18th century, of rhythms, structures and melodies from Latino countries. This process continues evolving in contemporary Spain and includes influences from Jazz and Salsa. Flamenco Latino has contributed to this evolution through its own New York brand of flamenco. Flamenco Latino continues its journey to the edge of the frontier, and has expanded its original concept through collaboration with tap dancers, Latin and jazz musicians, and involvement in theater pieces. Through its broad programming of adult and children’s classes, it offers its most talented students a path from the classroom to the stage, not only through recitals, but also through concert and local performance opportunities.

Description

Since inception in 1979, Flamenco Latino's professional company has explored and developed the genre known as Ida y Vuelta. This "Round Trip" genre had its birth during the late 18th century, when Spain and other countries in Europe were influenced by Afro Hispanic cultures. Flamenco Latino's Más Allá Series has pushed flamenco boundaries. Flamenco dance structures have been flavored with jazz, blues and salsa. Collaborations with tap dancers Omar Edwards and hip-hop choreographer Paige Stewart of The Kingdom Dance Co. represent bold steps. Since 2018, Flamenco Latino has presented its Series in collaboration with Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning and is partnering with The Secret Theatre in Woodside. Drawing on Basilio Georges' early professional career as a jazz musician, the music has reflected many jazz harmonic and improvisatory concepts, and has inspired Aurora Reyes to create many unique choreographies. From 2006-2016 the company had a studio theatre in West Midtown Manhattan. It has been developing its Queens profile and programming since leaving that space in 2017.

Programming includes the annual The Más Allá Series, adult and children’s classes in dance, guitar, and cante/palmas, Arts in Ed. performances and residencies, free community outreach and work with Senior Centers.
