ORGANIZATION: The Nature Conservancy in Ohio

Trail IN

The Nature Conservancy’s preserves protect some of the most rare and wonderful flora and fauna in Ohio, and we need YOU to help monitor and take care of them. It is a tremendous help to TNC staff to have extra people visiting each of the preserves and walking the trails regularly. This will assist staff in addressing issues with the preserve or trail in a timely manner. Without people helping to keep a watchful eye, the preserves are especially vulnerable to issues such as vandalism, dumping, poaching, illegal trespass, and ATV violations. Preserve Monitors must have the ability to take photos of potential problems and to access email, use text messaging, and occasionally chat via phone as needed. Preserves Monitors should be comfortable using aerial imagery and mapping systems such as Google Earth to communicate locations of potential problems with the Preserves Manager.

When issues occur, they must be addressed quickly, both for the safety of our visitors and to send the message that someone is paying attention. It is therefore important that we have dedicated volunteers who take pride in knowing that they help make them appear neat and well-kempt so that visitors and potential donors will experience a favorable first impression.

· What you can expect to work on: taking a walk along public trails at a preserve to identify any issues/potential hazards to visitors, communicate regularly with staff about visits, conduct light trail maintenance by removing debris or tripping hazards

· Region: Statewide at all TNC-Ohio Preserves or Trails

· Time Commitment : As often as once a week at some preserves, monthly is preferred, however any commitment of time is appreciated.

· Who would you report to: Angie Burke & Regional Staff

· Training required : Yes, discussion with TNC staff to review situation response procedures.
