The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor and National Canal Museum welcome volunteers who share our mission of preserving the history and culture of 19th-century canal life and interpreting it to students, families and adults. We have a wide range of opportunities available. Volunteers can become museum docents, greeters, gift shop clerks, field trip educators, interpreters at the locktender’s house, and/or program assistants for children’s activities at the museum. We also welcome volunteers who are interested in cataloguing and digitizing archival items, gardening, and those that have specialized skills like carpentry to help with exhibit enhancements and maintenance.

Mission Statement

Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor preserves, interprets and leverages the nationally significant history of the over 165-mile transportation route between Wilkes-Barre and Bristol, Pennsylvania. By building and maintaining public and private partnerships, we create four vital connections. We connect people to the enduring industrial heritage of the Corridor through education and preservation of historic sites and cultural resources. We connect people to health and wellness through outdoor recreation by reclaiming the historic transportation route as the D&L Trail. We connect towns and cities to opportunities for economic development along the D&L Trail and Corridor. We connect people to nature and the environment through conservation and education.

Description

Easton’s Hugh Moore Park is a picturesque extension of the City of Easton where America’s golden age of canals is on full display. With more than two miles of restored Lehigh Canal, a canal boat attraction unlike any other in Pennsylvania and the rest of the Northeast, and one of the country’s largest canal heritage museums, the 520-acre park nestled between the Lehigh Canal and Lehigh River is a throwback to the years when mules pulling canal boats on narrow towpaths was a common sight in much of the United States east of the Mississippi River.

The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor interprets this fascinating period of American history in the park through the National Canal Museum and rides on the 110-passenger Josiah White II canal boat (June-October). Explore our fun, hands-on exhibits highlighting 19th century canal life and technology.
