Volunteer Museum Docents for the San Francisco Historical Society

We are seeking volunteers for our docent training program. Upon completion, you will engage with SFHS museum visitors to offer a standard 20-30 minute museum tour. Desired skills are: a love of history, an aptitude for public speaking, and the ability to engage people of all ages - teaching experience a plus.

Qualifications

  • Passion for SF and its history

  • Enthusiasm for storytelling

  • Sense of humor

  • Enjoy working with people

Requirements

  • Commit to online and in-person training- 10-15 hours

  • Attend at least one museum tour during training

  • Commit to leading 1-2 docent tours a month during museum hours (Thursday- Saturday 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.)

  • Reinforce SFHS core mission

Mission Statement

The San Francisco Historical Society exists to uncover, preserve, and present, in engaging ways, the colorful and diverse history of our city from its earliest days to the present.

Description

We engage residents, visitors, and the next generation of history enthusiasts in exploring how San Francisco’s history has shaped its unique identity. We do this through history programs, walking tours, publications, mobile history apps, special events and exhibits, and ongoing collaborations with other local history groups and cultural institutions. Our museum and event space is located at the epicenter of old San Francisco, on the site of the city’s first branch mint at 608 Commercial Street.
