Teach debate to students in China to help them learn English!

In partnership with Huishuo English (HSE), tutors will teach a modified version of SPontaneous ARgumentation (SPAR) to English-learners in China. Tutors will guide students through a curriculum by discussing certain topics, helping them analyze written or verbal media in English, and engaging in debates to build fluency and on-the-spot thinking skills.

Tutors will be provided with a pre-designed curriculum, which outlines the materials and procedure of each session. Each session centers around a simple resolution/motion. At the beginning of the lesson, the student and tutor will read or watch a short article or video to introduce the general topic. Then, the two will prepare for the debate for a fixed number of minutes, followed by the debate itself. The debate will have short speaking times and contains a cross-examination period. At the end, tutors will deliver feedback in the form of verbal comments and rubrics.

English-learning students will be approximately B1 and above (students can carry out a reasonable discussion about familiar topics and draw basic conclusions from simple texts).

The goal of this program is to promote advanced reading and listening comprehension, as well as teaching students skillful, structured writing and spontaneous speaking.

Target areas: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, vocabulary, writing, speaking, conversation, grammar, persuasion

Mission Statement

Speech&Debate Academy aims to help educate students on the principles, processes, and activities within speech and debate for little to no charge. We are dedicated to promoting the spread of speech and debate within different schools and communities. Whether as a mechanism to learn communication or to achieve competition-readiness, Speech&Debate Academy hopes to broaden access to this activity.

Description

Speech&Debate Academy is composed of both synchronous and asynchronous components, all for free. Synchronous courses include free live Zoom sessions to learn a particular speech or debate event, either in a group or individually. To learn more, visit: https://www.learnspeechanddebate.com/synchronouslearning

Our asynchronous courses are self-guided online programs designed to teach participants several events, including parliamentary debate, limited and pre-prepared speech events, and more.

We collaborate with other organizations to provide English-learning through debate at reduced costs.

The Speech&Debate Academy nonprofit was founded by high school students, for high school students in 2022. The world of competitive speech and debate is often highly costly, with good training often inaccessible. Our goal is to give more people access to the world of speech and debate by having those experienced in the activity teach new students at little to no cost.
