ORGANIZATION: So What Else

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

At our acclaimed Outdoor Food Distribution located in Frederick! Volunteer once a month So What Else provides free food to over 500 people in the parking lot directly across from the Mr.Tire Center and next to Home Depot.

Volunteers will help with the following tasks: setting up tables, setting up tents, preparing produce, sorting produce, helping with line control, breaking down boxes, cleaning up, and more. Volunteers should plan to arrive 15 minutes early to allow time for a quick orientation. Volunteers should be able to stand for long periods, lift large boxes, and do a considerable amount of movement. Volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing they can both move around in and get dirty. This event is entirely outdoors so please dress accordingly and bring both water and a snack to your shift. This is a great opportunity for SSL hours, and children above 10 can participate as long as their parent/guardian accompanies anyone under 16.

AGE RESTRICTION: This is a great opportunity for children aged 10 and above to participate. A parent or guardian must accompany children aged 10-15, and if they arrive without one, their parent or guardian will be contacted. Volunteers aged 16 and above can participate independently without the presence of a parent or guardian.

9:00 am to 1:00 pm: Volunteers will assist in setting up the distribution, breaking down empty boxes, cleaning up, and assisting with the distribution breakdown.

We encourage you to sign up for any shift, even if you can't stay for the entire time. Simply inform the site lead upon arrival so our team can accommodate your schedule.

Interested volunteers should sign up for shifts by checking out our VolunteerHub volunteering platform here: https://sowhatelse.volunteerhub.com/

*To get to our distribution, type "1317 W Patrick St, Frederick, MD" into your GPS. This will take you directly to the parking lot entrance next to the Mr.Tire Center. After pulling into the lot, please find an available parking space that does not interfere with the parking needs of surrounding businesses. Aim to park close to the middle of the lot, near the distribution area located along Highway 40 by the trees and grassy area. Once parked, walk to the outdoor tables and ask for a staff person, then let them know you're there to volunteer.

About So What Else

Location:

4924 Wyaconda Rd, North Bethesda, MD 20852, US

Mission Statement

So What Else’s mission is to improve the lives of children and families living in underserved communities in the Baltimore-Washington Metro Area by providing food security, access to basic necessities, and high-quality out-of-school time programs in literacy, athletics, and the visual and performing arts while inspiring young people to give back to the community by creating volunteer opportunities for individuals of all ages.

Description

So What Else (SWE) is a nonprofit founded in 2009 that strives to improve the lives of children and families living in underserved communities in Maryland, D.C. & Baltimore by providing free food, home goods, high-quality, after-school time programs, and service opportunities to the children and families we serve. To support this work, we host a number of volunteer opportunities across the region in fields such as food recovery, teaching, event support and more. We strive to make volunteer service accessible & meaningful for people of all backgrounds, experiences, interests, capabilities, and capacities.

Roles are available for everyone (16 or younger may serve with a parent / designated adult guardian). Some tasks require a bit of bending and lifting (typically 2 to 5 lbs. occasionally up to 50lbs) and or being on your feet for extended periods. No one will be asked or expected to lift, carry or move any item that cause injury. Breaks and hydration are strongly encouraged. Smart teamwork and shared effort are paramount. Help from SWE site hosts and fellow volunteers is always available. For any special needs or considerations, please email volunteer@sowhatelse.org outlining your questions, concerns or requirements.
