About Us:

The San Francisco Historical Society (www.sfhisory.org) exists to uncover, preserve, and present, in engaging ways, the colorful and diverse history of our city from its earliest days to the present. We engage residents, visitors, and the next generation of history enthusiasts in exploring how San Francisco’s history has shaped its unique identity. We do this through history programs, school walking tours, publications, mobile history apps, museum tours, special events and exhibits, and ongoing collaborations with other local history groups and cultural institutions. Our museum and event space are located at the epicenter of old San Francisco, on the site of the city’s first branch mint at 608 Commercial Street (www.sfhistory.org).

Overview

Do you have a passion for San Francisco history and culture? If so, the SFHS Volunteer Walking Tour Guide Program may be right for you.

SFHS is looking for new walking tour guides specifically to lead/co-lead our 90-minute "Gold Rush & Sunken Ships" walking tours for our 4th grade field trips! Our Gold Rush and Sunken Ships tour explores ground zero of the California Gold Rush. Students learn how San Francisco grew from a sleepy trading village to a thriving boom town after the discovery of gold in 1848, instantly becoming the United States’ first truly international city and the center of trade in the West. This is an ideal volunteer opportunity for former teachers, retirees, college students or history enthusiasts.
