Turning Pages SC is an adult literacy council in Columbia SC that teaches adults to read through personalized one on one tutoring that is free of cost. We offer two reading programs for adults who read below a 9th grade level.

Learners meet with tutors at local libraries for one hour per week. Our remote wellness volunteers call our tutors and learners each month and ask a few targeted questions using our script.

  • 4 calls per month
  • Calls are under 10 minutes each
  • Answers logged on our digital form
  • Assignment lasts 6 months at a time

This easy, one hour per month role is fully remote. You will be using your own phone to place the calls. It is a great role for stay at home parents, homebound residents, college students or anyone who loves chatting, staying connected, and making an impact.

Mission Statement

We teach adults to read through personalized, one-on-one tutoring that is free of cost.

Description

Founded in 1968 as the Greater Columbia Literacy Council, Turning Pages SC has helped over 6,000 adults live easier in a text-based society.

We believe in a world where anyone can move up and ahead through the power of reading. So, we teach adults to read through personalized, one-on-one tutoring that is free of cost. We gift over 50 hours of private tutoring annually plus all books to adults reading below a 9th grade level in Richland, Lexington, and Aiken Counties of South Carolina

We train volunteer tutors, give them no-cost curriculum kits, and assign them to adult learners in need of reading help. Pairs commit to meeting one hour per week until they complete 24 sessions. Tutoring takes place at one of 29 local libraries across three counties.

Reading growth is reassessed by Turning Pages SC after 24 sessions.
