Especially if you are a retired teacher, please enjoy a few hours at Looma's controls, and then consider joining us!

First, a word about Looma: Looma Education is a California 501c3 non-profit working in the education sector of Nepal. Looma has achieved acceptance in Nepal with 1000’s of teachers and 10,000’s of students in 100’s of schools.

But: The major challenge for Looma development is that the integration of media files and lesson plans with the textbook chapters has been an entirely manual process.

However: We have a team of marvelous expert teaching volunteers working on the integration, but their manual effort cannot scale to 2000 chapters, or keep up with the new textbooks being released each school year.

AI may one day perform this task, but for now, today, volunteers (you?) can use Looma's many features to create and bring lesson plans to life.

Education in Nepal is based on British/Indian educational traditions from 100 years ago. It generally consists of rote learning, memorization, and recitation

For 12 years, Looma Education Company has been working in Nepal to introduce and proliferate modern teaching and learning methods, including active learning, student involvement, project-based instruction and digital access to the world’s knowledge (the Internet).

The Looma system is a digital learning system based on the Nepal government’s curriculum and textbooks, augmented with a huge library of instructional media tightly integrated into the curriculum. Looma runs on AWS (https://looma.website) and is available free to anyone world-wide.

Because most of the children in Nepal live in rural areas that lack reliable grid power and Internet, Looma provides an offline classroom audio-visual device containing the Looma Education System and media library in a battery-powered, solar-charged projector with sound system. With this Looma device under-served, under-resourced children get access to the same modern teaching and learning that are available to city students with Internet and power.

Looma is certified by the Center for Education and Human Resource Development, which works on education directly under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Government of Nepal. Looma was used as the government’s nation-wide, online Learning Portal during the Covid school shutdowns.

Looma uses the government-mandated curriculum and textbooks that are already used in Nepal and that Nepali teachers are trained for and comfortable with.

The magic of the Looma Education system is that it tightly integrates a very large (100GB, 25,000 media files) digital library into the standard curriculum. For each chapter in each textbook for each grade (12 grades, 75 textbooks and total of 2000 chapters) Looma links relevant media resources, like videos, Wikipedia articles, Khan Academy videos, TED talks, quizzes, games, simulations, and prepared lesson plans, all available with one mouse click. This tight integration is the essence of Looma and distinguishes Looma from any other available instructional platform.

Description

Providing quality education to Nepal’s nearly seven million school-age children is an enormous logistical, financial, and cultural challenge. Most of the 34,000+ schools are remote, lack reliable electric power and have inadequate (if any) Internet. Nepal has $175 per student per year, one hundredth of California’s $17,500 student budget. Rote learning has been the standard. Most parents lack the skills needed to help their children with school and career planning. The resources we take for granted (computers, Internet, textbooks, school library, a good teacher/student ratio, well-trained teachers, informed parental support...) aren't available.

LEC has overcome this challenge with Looma, an affordable, interactive audio-visual education system "in a box". It provides educational content and teacher support to the entire classroom-offline. Looma integrates a computer, A/V projector, webcam, and easy user interface with the national curriculum and a massive library of media files, teacher tools, learning games, and educational videos. It needs only 55 W ~ easy with solar. With Looma, students' roles are changed from 'audience' to 'actors'!
