During the spring and fall, Great Kids Farm offers in-school farm to classroom programming. In-school programs are often focused on cooking, planting, or tasting. We also have a popular tasting program that we call Garden Parties(that could involve dressing up as veggies for a skit). In-school programs bring a bit of the farm to schools that help teach students about where their food comes from.

These visits can occur on any Wednesday during the fall, winter, and spring from 9 am to 5 pm. Most programs will last from 2.5 to 4 hours. We will check in with you and your schedule before assigning you to a program. You will be expected to commit to one Wednesday in-school program a week for at least one season. All in-school programs will take place at a Baltimore City School, so you will need a mode of transportation to get to the specific school each week.

During the program, you will be assisting with the general flow of the program, assisting with tasks such as, set-up cleanup, and interacting with and helping students. If you're passionate/curious about working with elementary students and food education, then this position may be for you!

About Great Kids Farm of Baltimore City Schools

Location:

6601 Baltimore National Pike, Catonsville, MD 21228, US

Mission Statement

The Baltimore City Public Schools Farm to School (F2S) program promotes experiential education that connects students to nature and food systems. In every grade band, our programs and services focus on three core areas: (1) food education for lifelong healthy habits, (2) nature-based exploration for wholeness and academic enrichment, (3) food system engagement for active citizenship, leadership development, and career skills. Meaningful F2S experiences are transformative for students’ academic success and their social, emotional, and physical wellness. Additionally, they empower youth to understand, engage with, and co-create their food system in ways that can improve food security and sovereignty, while also preparing youth to be systems thinkers and social changemakers.

Description

With 33 acres of forests, fields, a stream, greenhouses, and a barn full of animals, Great Kids Farm (GKF) is a hub for hands-on Farm to School opportunities. GKF is owned and operated by Baltimore City Public Schools Food & Nutrition Services. We provide hands-on programs for pk-12th grade students, teachers, and families on the farm, and in their classrooms and school gardens.
