At GOTR WMA we match volunteers with a Girls on the Run Team in your area. The teams meet twice a week for 90 minutes afterschool from mid September to mid November. The days that you meet are determined by the coaching team. Each team has at least 3 coaches and 8-15 girls. Each 90 minute lesson has a social emotional topic that is brought to the girls through fun games and movement activities. The curriculum and all materials needed are provided so there is minimal prep needed. To become a coach you need to submit an application, complete a background check, interview and participate in new coach training.

About Girls on the Run Western MA

Location:

Mission Statement

Girls on the Run Western Ma inspires girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using fun, experience-based curricula that creatively integrates running. As the only national physical activity-based, positive youth development (PA-PYD) program for girls with an evidence-based curriculum, trained coaches, and a commitment to serving all girls, Girls on the Run makes a stronger impact than organized and physical education programs in teaching life skills such as managing emotions, resolving conflict, helping others, and making intentional decisions. The program’s intentional suite of curricula is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological, and physical skills and behaviors to successfully navigate life experiences. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and completing a celebratory, non-competitive 5K event providing the framework for confidence through accomplishment.

Description

The Western Massachusetts Girls on the Run council was established in 2015 and have been running programs in the 4 counties of Western Ma since then. We cover Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin and Berkshire counties. Girls on the Run is a youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. Each season our teams meet twice a week for 8-10 weeks, and each season culminates in a 5K celebration. We are excited to serve our 10,000 girl this year! We rely on volunteer coaches to facilitate our programs. We fully train coaches, supply all needed materials, including user friendly curriciculum. There is minimal prep needed to be a coach, and you DO NOT need to be a runner. The most important thing is to be committed to the season and be a caring adult for the girls on your team.
