Overview of the Youth Champions Program

The Youth Champions program supports migrant youth on the Thai-Myanmar border to become change leaders and build pathways to a brighter future for their communities. To achieve this, we provide skill-based competencies and critical language skills alongside meaningful opportunities to apply developing skills through service-based learning projects. Amidst ongoing conflict and displacement in neighboring Myanmar, the program has evolved to be responsive to diverse learning needs and to help youth navigate everyday precarity.

English language is a critical pillar of the program, and remains the most sought-after skill for Myanmar youth pursuing higher education and decent employment opportunities. Alongside an accredited English language curriculum, the program provides youth with a laptop, fosters the development of digital and higher-order thinking skills, and will challenge youth to apply new skills in an action-research project in partnership with local community-based organizations. The program is guided by Positive Youth Development (PYD) principles.

Volunteer Position Description

Based in Mae Sot, Thailand, the volunteer will work closely with our teachers and staff in a classroom setting to provide English language lessons during weekday mornings to a total of 20 students. The English language course will run from July 3rd through October 18, 2024, concluding with a final exam that will provide youth with a English for Academic Purposes (EAP) certificate upon receiving a passing score. InEd will provide volunteers with an accredited English curriculum, teaching resources, and continuous support and mentorship to ensure their success.

Volunteers can choose to support other areas of the program, such as teaching digital skills, visual communication, and research skills, in addition to supporting the English classes. We encourage volunteers with limited schedules to apply, as we are willing to accommodate flexible start/end dates.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare and deliver interactive English lessons based on the provided curriculum at an A2/B1 (beginner-intermediate) level.

- Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback to help them improve

- Engage with students in a culturally sensitive manner to facilitate a supportive learning environment

- Assist in the development of additional teaching materials and activities that cater to varying levels of English proficiency

- Participate in occasional meetings with the program staff to discuss student progress and curriculum effectiveness

- Help with organizing accommodation for your time in Mae Sot

- A thorough introduction to the organization

- Organized activities (barbeques, professional development workshops, field trips)

- Reference letter detailing your role, the project(s) you participated in and the dates you volunteered in.

Benefits of Volunteering

Volunteering with InEd offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the empowerment of migrant and displaced youth and to witness firsthand the impact of education. Volunteers will gain experience in teaching English as a second language, deepen their understanding of the challenges faced by migrant and displaced communities, and connect with a network of dedicated educators and activists. Additionally, volunteers will be part of a transformative program that not only educates but also inspires young leaders to effect positive change in a future democratic Myanmar.

The location of the program in Mae Sot provides ample opportunities for immersion in a linguistically and culturally rich setting. Nestled alongside the Moei River, which divides the land borders of Thailand and Myanmar, Mae Sot is the main economic gateway between the two countries with a substantial population of migrants and refugees. Volunteers can connect with peers working at other humanitarian and non-governmental organizations and explore Northern Thailand. Night buses run daily from Mae Sot to major tourist destinations, such as Chiang Mai and Bangkok.

Interested volunteers please send a CV and a cover letter detailing your motivation to: info@inedfoundation.org

We can be flexible with the time commitment for volunteering. Applicants must commit to a minimum of 4-weeks. Ideally, we are seeking a volunteer for 12 weeks.
