About The Humane Party: The Humane Party is America's first political party dedicated to legal rights and personhood for all animals, full realization of an ecosystem (neutral, sustainably prosperous economy), and support and election of only those candidates who have committed to humane values both personally and politically.


Founded in 2009, The Humane Party has regularly nominated and supported candidates for US political offices, including the 2016, 2020 and 2024 U.S. Presidential Elections and U.S. Senate and House of Representatives elections. After several years of foundational development, The Humane Party is now undergoing an exciting phase of evolution and is developing the infrastructureand executing plans to make significant advancements in achieving its mission.


Position Overview: The Chief Operations Officer (COO) is a volunteer staff leadership role responsible for overseeing the operational activities of The Humane Party and stepping in for the Chief Executive Officer / Staff Coordinator as needed. This position requires a 15-20 hour per month commitment and will play an essential role in contributing to the organization's success and fulfilling its next strategic plan. The Chief Operations Officer will work closely with the Board of Directors, staff volunteers, and other stakeholders to streamline processes, manage resources effectively, and support the organization's growth and impact.


Key Responsibilities:

Ensure Organizational Alignment to The Humane Party's 2028 Vision and Strategic Plan

  • Review and evolve The Humane Party's structure and organizational chart to align with its forthcoming 2028 vision and strategic plan.
  • Facilitate and attend monthly volunteer staff progress meetings to ensure adequate progress toward the organization's strategic plan.
  • Provide operational insights and recommendations to aid the Humane Party Board in advancing the Party's goals.

Oversee The Humane Party's Talent Strategy

  • Recruit, hire, and support staff, ensuring alignment with the organization's values and goals. Develop and monitor performance goals and targets for each staff member. Provide ongoing support, feedback, and guidance to volunteers.
  • Develop and implement organizational policies and processes to guide staff and volunteer leaders.
  • Identify and respond to staff volunteer needs, including developing policies, processes, and other forms of support required to facilitate their work. Foster a collaborative and supportive environment for volunteers.

Build the Humane Party's Operational Capacity

  • Provide oversight and guidance to staff volunteers regarding projects and initiatives. Ensure alignment with the organization's mission, goals, and operational standards.
  • Identify and recommend operational investments, such as technology, infrastructure, or other resources, to support the organization's growth and evolution. Analyze the cost-effectiveness and potential impact of proposed investments.
  • Identify and implement appropriate tactical and operational improvements for the organization, such as internal communications policies, policies related to the governance of committees and more.
  • Collect and analyze relevant performance data for the organization in connection with strategic plan and organizational KPIs, such as growth in stakeholder engagement and growth in awareness of the Party. Provide data-driven insights and recommendations to the Board of Directors and leadership team.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience in managing and leading others, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment, and skills in active listening are required to be successful in this role.
  • Relevant experience with business and business processes, volunteer-led organizations, political parties, and mission-driven organizations is valued.

The Chief Operations Officer reports to the Humane Party CEO/Staff Coordinator and will interface regularly with the Board of Directors and volunteers. This individual filling this position will have the opportunity to play a pivotal role in growing The Humane Party and will have key opportunities to make substantial and foundational contributions to the success of the organization.
