Position Overview: The Volunteer Coordinator oversees recruitment, onboarding/training, and coordination of volunteers for Kalamazoo Animal Rescue. They play a vital role in ensuring smooth operations and supporting the shelter’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Recruitment and Outreach:
    • Actively recruit volunteers through various channels (website, print media, community events, etc.).
    • Respond to inquiries about the volunteer program.
  1. Onboarding, Orientation and Training:
    • Conduct thorough screening on volunteer applications.
    • Prepare for and schedule regular volunteer orientations (approximately 1-2 per month).
    • Train, mentor, and serve as the primary contact for volunteers.
  1. Coordination and Communication:
    • Coordinate with other areas of the rescue to determine volunteer staffing needs.
    • Manage the volunteers in our online system (accounts, acknowledgements, active status, etc)
    • Ensure all volunteers have signed necessary forms and maintain up-to-date volunteer rosters.
  1. Event Organization:
    • Secure and organize volunteers for events (e.g., adoption events, fundraisers, off-site programs).
    • Attend events to lead volunteers.
    • Work with the Volunteer Newsletter team on the publication to include new volunteers and events

Requirements:

  • Complete a volunteer application on our website kalamazooanimalrescue.org
  • Strong attention to detail to accurately assess volunteer applicant suitability.
  • Excellent communication skills, with proficiency in using the phone and email for professional correspondence.
  • A customer service-oriented attitude, with the ability to handle inquiries and conversations with empathy and professionalism.
  • Basic computer skills, including the use of email, word processing, and database software.
  • A passion for animal welfare and a commitment to finding the best volunteers for the job

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in volunteer coordination a plus
  • Ability to work independently and make informed decisions as well as with a team
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and handle multiple cases simultaneously.

KAR is located in Portage, MI and has animals in foster homes and cats at the main office location. We pride ourselves in finding quality homes for our animals and helping the community with our low cost Wellness Clinics and pet owner education.
