Volunteer Period (3 months): January 6 - March 30, 2025 (in-person in Tanzania)
As a rural educational institution, the Mungere School manages a campus farm to provide a sustainable and nutritious meal program for students. Coupled with a 4-H-based rabbit husbandry project, the program currently serves over 240 meals daily to students and staff. This position is perfect for a trained agriculture and animal care professional, who has a passion for teaching, while also training operational staff members, coordinating farm work, and facilitating research and implementation of local and modern farming techniques.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with School Management Team to create a sustainable school farm plan, analyzing program need to determine crop and acreage allocation
- Supervise and direct work activities of the 21,000 square foot garden, such as planting, irrigation, fertilizer application harvesting and record-keeping.
- Oversee farm and animal production and stock records; prepare program financial budgets and operational reports
- Coordinate integration of environmental issues, wellness and garden and animal husbandry activities into school curriculum and events
- Plan and lead school garden activities integrating agriculture, and healthy eating and living skills, including the training of school garden champions
- Provide education and create systems to improve attitudes and knowledge related to agriculture and nutrition
- Purchase, inspect and maintain equipment
- Other projects as assigned
Qualifications:
- Minimum 2 years of work experience in farm management with demonstrated passion for agricultural development, WWOOFers welcome
- Animal care experience; apiary skills a plus
- Skill in data analysis and record-keeping
- Experience traveling, living and/or working abroad preferred
- Interest in East Africa’s indigenous cultures and traditions
- Adaptable to living in a developing community
- Humility. We require individuals joining our growing organization to combine leadership skills with humor, patience and a humble approach to service
Other Details:
- FTE/40hrs per week; minimum 3-month commitment
- Free shared housing including utilities available
- Stipends available; DOE
- Professional and cultural orientation program (language training available)
- We do not charge Program Fees; Volunteers are responsible for their own travel and living costs
