Purpose
This volunteer position directly fulfills Brucemore’s mission of inspiring community interaction with history, preservation, and the arts by assisting staff with the nurturing and care of our post-derecho historic landscape restoration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with staff to care for the 400+ trees, shrubs, and other foliage planted on the estate as part of Brucemore’s post-derecho historic landscape restoration.
  • Follow staff instructions to ensure your safety and the safety of those working with you.
  • Assist staff in cleaning and returning equipment to appropriate storage locations at the end of each shift.

Staff Supervisor(s)
This volunteer position reports to the Program and Outreach Manager for shift scheduling. The Landscape Manager will provide day-of training and supervision.

Time Commitment
A regular shift will range from two to three hours.

Qualifications
Volunteers in this role should be pleasant-mannered, patient, and dependable. Volunteers must be able to walk across uneven terrain, engage in physical activities such as walking, standing, kneeling, bending, squatting for periods of time. Some activities may require volunteers to lift up to 40 lbs. Volunteers must be able to provide their own transportation to and from the site for their shifts. Volunteers must be at least high-school aged and have parental consent if under the age of 18.

Communication

All general volunteer communications are sent via email - this includes volunteer sign-ups, updates, announcements, and training opportunities. Brucemore also uses Sign-up Genius, Google products, and other digital tools and websites to manage our volunteer program. These digital tools may require volunteers to create an account. The ability to use a computer for scheduling, email communication, and continued training purposes is preferred. Please contact the Program and Outreach Manager to discuss accommodations as needed.

If there is a need to postpone or cancel a volunteer shift (such as in the case of inclement weather), a member of Brucemore staff will contact scheduled volunteers at least an hour before the scheduled start time. Brucemore staff will first attempt to contact volunteers at the phone number on file. If staff are unable to leave a voicemail or reach a volunteer at that number, an email will be sent to the email address on file.

Training Requirements
Training for this position will be provided the day of your volunteer shift by staff and will vary depending on the tasks assigned during the shift. Training may include but is not limited to best tree care practices, tips and strategies on weeding, watering, etc., best outdoor and equipment safety practices, and basic site wayfinding.

Dress Code
Volunteer attire should be neat, clean, and appropriate for work being performed and the setting in which the work is performed- this includes leisure wear that provides appropriate coverage. Volunteers in this role are required to wear closed-toed shoes. We recommend volunteers wear layers and clothing they don’t mind getting dirty. Volunteers should bring their own water bottle and sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, sun shirt, etc.). Please reach out to the Program and Outreach Manager with any questions.
