Youth Woodshop Advisor Volunteer Job DescriptionRole Overview:

As a Youth Woodshop Advisor, you will play a crucial role in fostering the creativity and skill development of young woodworkers. Your expertise will guide them in using tools safely, planning and executing projects, and understanding essential safety standards. This volunteer position is an opportunity to inspire the next generation of woodworkers and instill a passion for craftsmanship.

Qualifications:
  • Passion for Woodworking: A genuine interest in woodworking and a desire to share your knowledge with young learners.
  • Experience: Proficiency in woodworking, including familiarity with various tools, techniques, and safety practices.
  • Patience and Communication: Ability to work with youth, explain concepts clearly, and provide constructive feedback.
  • Safety Awareness: Understanding of safety protocols and the ability to emphasize safe practices in the woodshop.
Responsibilities:

Advise the camp staff on:
  1. Tools selection and use that will :

    • Introduce youth to different woodworking tools (e.g., saws, drills, sanders) and their proper usage.
    • Teach safe handling techniques, emphasizing protective gear and precautions.
    • Assist youth in selecting appropriate tools for specific projects.
  2. Developing Project Support that will help the staff:

    • Collaborate with youth to plan and execute woodworking projects.
    • Provide guidance on project design, material selection, and construction methods.
    • Encourage creativity while ensuring feasibility and safety.
  3. Establish Safety Standards that:

    • Educate youth about safety rules and best practices in the woodshop.
    • Monitor adherence to safety guidelines during workshops and project sessions.
    • Address any safety concerns promptly.
  4. Help Create a Skill Development:

    • Facilitate skill-building workshops (e.g., joinery, finishing techniques, measuring) based on participants’ interests and abilities.
    • Foster a positive learning environment where youth can explore and improve their woodworking skills.
  5. Assist with Community Engagement that:

    • Encourages youth to showcase their work within the community (e.g., exhibitions, local events).
    • Promotes the woodshop program to attract new participants.
