Trail Crew Assist

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Description

The Whiskeytown Trail Crew Volunteer Program provides individuals with the opportunity to assist the National Park Service in maintaining and preserving the park’s extensive trail system. Volunteers will work directly with NPS staff to perform essential trail maintenance tasks, ensuring safe and sustainable public access while gaining experience in trail management, conservation practices, and outdoor infrastructure maintenance.


Schedule & Commitment

  • · Hours: 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM
  • · Days: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays
  • · Commitment: Minimum of two volunteer days per month


Duties & Responsibilities

Trail Crew Volunteers will engage in hands-on maintenance and conservation work, including:

  • Clearing and maintaining trails to ensure accessibility and safety.
  • · Removing downed trees and debris in accordance with NPS trail management protocols.
  • · Assisting with erosion control measures and sustainable trail-building techniques.
  • · Reinforcing trail structures, including water bars, steps, and retaining walls.
  • · Using hand tools such as loppers, Pulaskis, and McLeods to complete maintenance tasks.
  • · Participating in training sessions to develop knowledge of NPS trail maintenance standards.
  • · Supporting invasive plant removal to help sustain native vegetation along trail corridors.
  • Qualifications & Expectations
  • · Ability to hike on uneven terrain and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • · Willingness to work in a variety of outdoor conditions, including hot, cold, and wet environments.
  • · Ability to follow safety protocols and work effectively as part of a team.
  • · Prior trail maintenance experience is not required; all necessary training will be provided.

Important Additional Information

  • · Volunteers must provide their own transportation to and from the park Headquarters.
  • · This opportunity does not include potential for housing.
  • · Participants must wear appropriate outdoor work attire, including sturdy boots and weather-appropriate clothing.
