Children and No-Sew Binkies

We are hosting a local summer blanket making event for the Potomac Falls, VA area at the Loudoun County Public Library-Cascades location. For this event, we are making blankets to give to children who are affected by difficult circumstances such as illness, poverty, or violence in the home. Blankets are the fleece-tied type that require no prior skill or experience to make. Knitting, crocheting, and sewing activities will also be available for those who are interested, including making stuffed toys and blanket squares for knitted and crocheted quilts.

This event is absolutely free and encouraged for all ages to attend, including children, teens, and adults looking to make a positive impact on the Northern Virginia community. It is encouraged but not required for volunteers to attend the whole event. Whether you can participate for an hour or for the whole event, we would love for you come and help out how you can. We DO verify hours for school and court requirements as requested and with the proper documentation provided, so this is a great event for those who need such volunteer hour verification!

There is also no prior skill or experience required to participate in this event, just willing hands and willing heart! Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own sharp pair of sewing scissors or knitting needles if they have them, but all supplies will be provided at the event. Lunch and water will also be provided to volunteers free of charge.

While some supervision will be provided to all participants, adult supervision provided by Binky Patrol or The Loudoun County Public Library of minors at all times cannot guaranteed for this event. Therefore, if you are attending with a group of 4 or more minors (person under 18 years old), please let us know ahead of time. You will be required to provide your own adult supervision for a group of 4 or more minors at a ratio of 1 adult per every 4 children you bring.

Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns ahead of time to your local Binky Patrol Coordinator, Caitlin Peterson-Woolard, at faithstar23@yahoo.com. We look forward to seeing you at our Summer Bink-A-Thon.

Mission Statement

Our Mission Statement All volunteer, national, non-profit organization making and distributing homemade blankets to children born HIV+, drug-addicted, infected with AIDS or other chronic & terminal illnesses, those who are abused, in foster care or experiencing trauma of any kind.Economic demographics, race, social status play no role in the decision of who gets binkies. We simply check our local area shelters, hospitals, emergency foster care and other agencies to see who has the need we can help fill. We encourage our chapters to build local community by seeking the "invisible kids" near them. Those who have been forgotten, not been seen, not heard are the ones we seek to comfort. Children and teens may experience trauma when a parent or sibling is ill or has passed away. These children need binkies too - not just the ones in the hospital. They need a gift - a reminder - that they, too are loved and thought of by someone who cares.

Description

We are looking to help out both the children and the eldery (who as they saying goes, are children the second time) in need of love, care, and understanding that homemade blankets show and offer to them.
