Shelter Pop-up Market Volunteers

Program: Gateway Administration

Location: Gateway Admin Building, locations disclosed at orientation

Reports to: Bessana Kendig, Volunteer Coordinator

Shift: Dates to be determined with interested Volunteers

Tasks: Work as a team to organize, sort, and store clothing and needed items in the clothing shed. Determine what donations items can be put out for the free market. Help organize or resituate other storage shed supplies to optimize space. Assemble care packages filled with items from the bulk supply i.e. fill student backpacks to be handed out to children upon arrival at the shelter. Local ARC drop-off for unneeded items. Possible laundry cycles at facility.

Skills Required: Ability to lift heavy bags and boxes of donated clothing, hygiene, and other various items. Patience and flexibility with working outside in the courtyard and the changes in weather. Ability and willingness to do laundry at facility. People not easily overwhelmed by a large number of items in a small space preferred.

Other: Note that the pop-up markets are an option to host and attend but the scheduled times for these will be determined by the shelter director and clients.

Summary:

Gateway Domestic Violence Services is the only 24/7 safe and confidential shelter for survivors of domestic violence in all of Aurora and Arapahoe county. In the United States, 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner. It’s paramount that we shine a light on domestic violence and spread the word about our organization as a community resource. Our organization relies on active volunteers like you to help us carry out our daily functions to reach as many as possible.

Spring cleaning is upon us, which means everyone has donations they want to go directly to help those in need. Whether you’re available for one morning or afternoon or would like to become a regular helper for the donation system, we can utilize you!

Preventing and eliminating intimate partner violence through counseling, residential care and empowering people for social change.

Description

Gateway Domestic Violence Services offers counseling, residential care and court advocacy services for victims of domestic violence and their families in Arapahoe County, Colorado. We receive more than 9,000 crisis calls a year, provide 10,000+ nights of residential care for families and their pets, and we assist with 2,000+ court advocacy cases for domestic violence victims.

Individual counseling is available for women, men and children suffering from the effects of domestic violence. Gateway counselors work to empower and to heal the pain and scars of abusive relationships. Our process includes education, self- empowerment, building self-esteem, setting boundaries, safety planning, and forming healthy relationships.

We provide a 24-hour crisis line answered by trained staff who offer referrals, counseling and crisis intervention: 303.343.1851

At the Aurora Municipal Court, Gateway houses a Court Advocacy Program (CAP) that provides victims of domestic violence with emotional support, information on their legal options and support through the court processes.

Gateway operates two residential shelter facilities. The short-term facility in Aurora has 24 beds and a 30-day program; our long-term facility in southern Arapahoe county has a 15-bed capacity and extended stay up to 90 days.
